HEAT PUMPS

Heat pumps

The world’s most efficient air-conditioning system

The heat pump is based on thermodynamics, it transports energy as heat from one place to another.

Hur fungerar värmepumpar?

The heat pump can obtain energy from different external sources, such as ground and water (geothermal) and air (aerothermal). The main characteristic of the heat pump is the capacity to multiply by 3.4 and up to 5 times the electrical energy consumed, generating thermal energy for the HVAC of the installation, making it the most efficient system at present.

Heat pumps are used for heating, cooling and heating the domestic hot water (DHW) of the installation.

We often hear the word COP when we talk about the performance of heat pumps, the COP is the coefficient of performance at a precise moment, heat pumps have COPs between 3 and 5, that is, from 1 kW of electricity they can generate 3 kW to 5 kW of thermal energy, however, the important value in heat pumps is the SPF, that is, the seasonal performance factor, in short, the average COP over the year, this value is what really tells us how much our heat pump has consumed and how many kW/h it has generated.

Which heat pump to choose?

In order to choose the right heat pump it is necessary to know the characteristics of each installation and go to a professional in the sector, however, we can advance the work a little by knowing the characteristics of each one.

Geothermal heat pumps are the most efficient HVAC system in the world, however, there are certain requirements, the first being the need to have land to be able to make the geothermal boreholes, in the case of a new home they could be made under the house itself, but for renovation we need to have outside space to make the wells.

The cost of the installation of the geothermal heat pump is higher than that of the aerothermal system but being a more efficient system is compensated over the years, another advantage of geothermal energy with respect to aerothermal energy is the noise and visual impact, aerothermal energy is necessary to install outdoor equipment that produces noise due to the fan and compressor, currently the equipment is becoming quieter but will never reach the level of geothermal energy.

On the other hand, it is important to take into account the climate in which the heat pump is going to be installed, since for extreme climates, where it is very hot in summer and very cold in winter, geothermal energy is the ideal system since it is not affected by changes in the outside temperature, however, aerothermal energy is currently the only system that can be used in extreme climates, where it is not affected by changes in the outside temperature, However, aerothermal energy at these times when it is hotter or colder is precisely when more power is needed to achieve comfort and when there are extreme temperatures, temperatures below zero and temperatures above 35ºC, the performance is the lowest of the year, since the energy is extracted from the air.
